Sweet Grass harvest is Beginning

I have begun to harvest Sweet Grass for this year; it should be a big harvest and I will have some braids ready by Lughnasadh for everyone at church, friends, and family. As the Lammas Festival approaches, I am thinking through the idea of Harvest.

There are some things that are considered "harvest" for the various major harvest festivals through Summer and Autumn. Other things are harvested from the early Spring through to the next Winter, but are not considered a part of the large harvest festivals; or have their own harvest festivals when in season, such as with Strawberries.

At this time, my Harvests are Sweet Grass, Sage, Mints, blossom petals, Peppers, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Zucchini, and some late Strawberries. I have been getting herbs, chives and onions all along.

Later in the season I will have Maize, in the form of blue Popcorn, Winter Squash, and Job's Tears. This year I did not get in Rye, Oats, and Wheat ... around about Lughnasadh is when I am wishing I had.

In the future, I want to renew my efforts to have nominal harvests of ancient grains as symbolic of our connections to the ancient peoples who developed the grains we used.

Make no mistake, the Wheat that we use in our bread was developed by the ancients, millennia ago. Contemporary agriculturalists have only tweaked what has been a mainstay for us, humanity, from time out of mind.

All the best
Nicholas
